Trevor passed away 6am Wednesday 21 April 2021

When we had that afternoon of costume making, out of bin bags and masking tape, I unexpectedly gave Trevor a look of 1980s Boy George. A truly gentle gent.  "many people said one of their favourite people was Trevor.
Gestural communication in dance is a wonderful way to communicate with Trevor to appreciate his cheeky, twinkling humour and innate sense of style!"

I'm grateful for many things and knowing Trevor is one of them. He has passed on peacefully at 80 after increasing dementia, so he is at peace. 

My grief is strong and looking at it it has lot to do with history and politics.

 

Trevor acted courteously and interested in everyone and their families, friendships. He was always in supported living while i knew him and i think had spent quite lot of his life in it.

So who knew him well ?over a long time? family but they lived far away, who was there on a day to day basis, staff can be fantastic but change and they don't know that ie. 5 years ago you really enjoyed something or......they might not be in a placed to 'fight your corner 'make that extra effort that means you can do something, or can but not always...

Who "has your back' as a friend would say?

Trevor gave so much and couldn't always speak clearly but communicated well!

I've written about him often in this blog, often i see now on his birthdays. Always one for an event.

I felt very privileged to know Trevor, he once gave me for no apparent reason a bottle of champagne in a blue plastic bag and another time a bunch of fake daffodils i still treasure in my 'office.'

I want to write more but think i will leave the space for comments from us all and add to it later...

In Shallal Dance Theatre we will stay on zoom over lunch on Friday and we will have a minutes silence and start to create work to remember and honour him

A Day and the day of Trevor's funeral

What a day!

I realise as Shallal gets so much bigger than the projects i'm involved in, that i often resort to the quick fix of an instagram story, a diary in images than come to write in here. Writing not being my first love, however i do chat, ( as those who work with me know!) and this blog is more chat really!!

And instagram stories don't capture memories and thoughts I can to return to this blog often proves to be so helpful for reflection and memory.

So i think i will just go through this day...it's now really the next day, as its after midnight, and my cup of chamomile tea also highlights i could do the day by drinks, but lets go for sequence...

wear 'posh' clothes at start of day as fear i won't have time to change, got to look good for Trevor! run around garden trying to find white flowers and greenery ( spend too long on base to lie them on ) and mount Eddies card to be taken to Trevor's funeral and remember Yvonne's card as well

9am .herbal teas..our lovely new financial manager Theresa Elgar meets with myself and Claire of Shallal Sketchbooks untangling for her the threads of funding that have supported this wonderful and now embedded project, many thanks to all who have supported it in many ways and as i end the day Laura Menzies writes to let me know she is on the search for new funds and there are lovely ideas brewing, for digital development, a short film to be made with Adam Drake...

10.15 -11.15  Tuesday morning is now Colin and my catch up time allowing others to join us ..oh dear my brain feels already fried only an hour into the day! here is where the drinks come in coffee - yes and we start again refuelled. The new website is nearly for viewing and we have something to edit for Lou for it and so much to chat about, i sometimes can't remember it all. Most importantly Colin phoned Giles, Trevors very close friend from Waterloo House to let him know Trevor has died and we have been sent  a link to the funeral so he can tune in to watch. Giles and Trevor (with Duane who brought them along) were such a duo/trio so comfortable and funny together. Dance Deliveries chat next week. Zoom on Mondays, one more and then maybe we start our Tuesday afternoon regular zoom offer.

11.15 Phoebe and Lou of Shallal Studios join us, Phoebe and i are having regular chats now as so much going on and planning so we need to keep connected. She and Lou are working flat out with website designer, new website launch soon and with wonderful mentors for a Shallal business plan. We are chatting about cover for Krowji Summer Open Studios 27-30 August, we will all do it voluntarily and invite others to join us, exciting chat and lots of ideas and support identified.

12.10 Colin reminds me to leave and I'm now glad i got dressed and had flowers and cards ready.

It was a fab funeral! not an adjective one associates with funerals, but so well considered and delivered.

Firstly a piper! greeted by bagpipes - bliss, anyone who knew Trevor would instantly smile!

I'm not going to be able to write about it as tears come. 

Great to see Star and Debs and see how Shallal was a part of Trevor's life through photos and reminiscences, and two people saying how they loved to see his films - big thank you to Barbara, who made them and edited the Doorways duet with him and Giles.

We all sat with the wonderful Steve Tanner photo of Trevor looking at us and the entry song Cheek to Cheek's opening words were "Heaven, I'm in heaven."

3pm After chatting for so long to (3D people- not 2D zoom world people) Debs and Star, I sat in my car and sent some photos to Amy and Shallal instagram story, then pottered on home.

Star went on to deliver the flowers they are holding to Katie and Kerry J as Amy gave them to be shared to those who knew Trevor.

6pm Trustees meeting, I kept meaning to take a photo..so good to see them all. A lot to talk about and listen to, so grateful to have such good people behind us and excited to be interviewing for our new general manger post next week!

Zoe Wilton will represent Shallal members ( i will email her now) and David Cox will be on the panel with Nick as trustees.

We are so grateful to have had the privilege and pleasure to have known him and danced with him.

Which links a conversation at sunset and one after the funeral, the quality of soul in the arts, Trevor had it and he shared it, love is generous.

"A much loved member of Cornish performance company Shallal Dance Theatre will be celebrated in style this week .
Trevor's Tribute Tea Dance will be held at Princess Pavillion 6-8pm Friday 15th July.
Trevor Hills was a longstanding and  popular performer, loved by everyone and known for his unique dress sense.

Trevor died in 2021 during covid restrictions, so few company members were able to attend his funeral. A show for Trevor was a must, a piece to commemorate and celebrate the life of this very special man.

Trevor's wonderful personality brought warmth and gentleness to the room and his humour was infectious. A natural clown, his humour was visual and playful and he loved being silly.
Occasionally Trevor could be seen in sensible sweatshirt and jogging bottoms, but usually he sported one of two distinctive outfits; his James Bond style suit, complete with bow tie, or full Scottish attire featuring hat, woollen socks and kilt with sporran.

The Trevor Hills Memorial Fund has been set up, with money donated being used to help with transport costs for those needing help to attend Shallal sessions. The company believes lack of transport should not be a barrier to access and attendance.

Shallal welcomes everyone to watch this special performance, featuring dance, music, song and poetry, then join in with a dance if desired!
There will be a buffet spread and of course plenty of tea.
Come 'dress to impress' in party frocks, snazzy shirts and hats.
Smart suits and kilts most welcome!"

Meanderings...

Well we have celebrated and mourned friends before in Shallal Dance Theatre.

our poetry book to Helen Thompson, Eileen and Marjorie and now our dear Trevor.

Oh my, i have boxes of tissues at the ready.

Trevor died during the pandemic and we only could send 3 people to his funeral, no wake and we weren't meeting up, so now we are here.

Gathering today surrounded by flowers, friends, art, dance, song, an ode and cake to remembering someone whose words were sometimes limited and indistinct but whose personality and gift for friendship was huge and we all carry in our hearts.

For me Trevor represents so much history, so many others.

And a real loss.

So, Giles plans to come, we are so pleased, he and Trevor with their support worker Duane, were like 3 very cheeky musketeers they had fun and we all shared it! They made the journey from St Mawes to Newlyn for Shallal Dance Theatre every Friday. The door into the room at St Peters hall had a sense of 'theatrical entrance' and there was always a cheer and welcome when they came in! The humour of ( Trevor's) outfits, which we will again enjoy tonight as many of us dress up to remember him.

They came via the wonderful longstanding community group Friends and Dancing and so Friends and Dancing have made 2 dances to share as well this evening.

I'm off now to do last minute preparation and some sandwich making.

So yesterday we went to the Court of Appeal. So many people came to support and the court room was full! 

The judge said that they really understood the human element of the case - hurrah! Thank you so much everyone for coming.  

Heidi gave a speech outside the court (she was too busy with ITV, and so missed her opportunity to speak in court, the life of an activist!)

And so now we wait........................we expect the judgement to be in October time, Please keep talking about the case, telling everyone you know. It is surprising how many people don't realise that there is this level of discrimination in our law.

I am at the flat space now i need to focus and yesterday we had our music list for Shallal 2 60mins for a 20min performance, interesting?! we are now in mid process or later!

and Shallal Dance Theatre is at about the same point with a more ambitious show, live and recorded music, voice, stunts, visual arts, 4 spaces ...and up to 30 people not 10 Shallal 2 has approx 10 at present and we reckon one in each decade 0-60 - i'm the oldest!

we had our second meeting Tuesday and that is exciting! and terrifying, but in the hands of a professional Jonathan to guide us it feels do-able, even to an indecisive person like me, especially as George and Victoria are compiling it, just have to hand over masses of info for their edit!!

Many thanks to all our behind the scenes people again as we can now invest in work we want to research and support, we haven't has this security before and it really helps and shows in the public work as well.

Trevor started in a Healthy Living group run in Truro about 2011/12 he then went onto Friends and Dancing and later into Shallal Dance Theatre with Giles supported by Duane, he now lives in Truro and still attends both groups regularly, supported by Star.
We wanted to make a short documentary about him for PDSW competition re older dancers, however as his health was been less good recently, rather than give him too much focus ( stress)  we are now working on a documentary looking at all of us over 50 in Shallal, we don't like any definitions, boundaries, but if it helps to show we can all keep going work together across all those divides then thats good! Barbara is doing this with us and we are always grateful to work with her.

Thanks again to all those working in the background: trustees, business manager, bid writer, their experience and expertise is reassuring!

Last day of carving, still some filming, rehearsals and trying to collate it all so far and piecing together the rich jigsaw inspired by Passmore Edwards and everyones response and inspiration.

Trevor Hill fund raiser and news

 Big Thank you to John Willis who raised £1400 for the Trevor Hill Memorial Fund by running the Oxford Half Marathon.

The fund will help people in supported living access Shallal sessions.
Thank you to all who supported his fund raiser, we can already see the difference this fund is enabling.
John remembers Trevor fondly over many years of being around Shallal shows especially Doorways at Godolphin House.

Fundraising is a constant conversation in charities and family are a constant conversation for many of us, so when two combine in a nice event and a good memory legacy it was a cause to celebrate. Four of our family went off to Oxford to support John.

John remembers Trevor more than i thought and this means so much, we all affect each other and Trevors legacy is special for many reasons that i can't articulate clearly enough in this short blog post.

We recently had an AGM and 3 'new' people to Shallal described in a heartfelt way what Shallal meant to them. They have come into Shallal via Shallal Sketchbooks and Picture Post and this shows how Shallal has 'grown up', it is bigger, wider and hopefully better than before. Still keeping it's family feel and credit was given to our trustees and especially to Nick Fripp for hosting the AGM so well. Our trustees have graciously steered us through the last few years really proving their supportive guiding roles. We are very grateful, the gratitude goes through out the organisation as everyone gives their best!

And it is remarkable the skills and vision that people bring, our new website is one of these and our new business plan is on it's way.

Awaiting 2 films and lots on, i want to post work from Foraging Nectar..its beginning to sound like a TO DO list..time to stop...

Last thought

A friend recently commented how he disliked blogs! ( oops here i am )  he is involved in something wonderful that we talked about ages ago when the film Elephant Queen came out, now they have huge education and outreach programmes as well as illustrated school books.

 "completed more than 17 screenings of The Elephant Queen and reached over 6000 people in the first two weeks in schools and communities in southern Kenya. The screenings are part of our 8 month-long nationwide tour."

 I've been trawling through trying to find a photo of Trevor, after making our newsletter, getting ready to be on half term holiday, winding down.

Shallal has expanded and we are embracing that at our next AGM where we hope to start to bring in the whole Shallal participating community as voting members ( at present the voting members are the people in Shallal Dance Theatre).

We are busy across Shallal in Friends and Dancing, Express Yourself and Shallal Dance Theatre,

 all groups Trevor attended for years. we are making, writing, singing, dancing, acting, reminiscing and collecting memories to create from, and looking forward to our first large social gathering with some flown in on Zoom and Film specially for the occasion which will, also have a lot of cake!

tribute to Jean

Sad news, not totally unexpected, yesterday at Friends and Dancing, that Jean had died. She was ill in hospital over the last 2 months so not totally unexpected, but she was a much loved member of the group and one of the people who's dance makes your heart sing, as Jean's condition and health deteriorated she still sparkled and could be incredibly animated when engaged in dance. Jean was one of the main people who forms my continual thinking on gestural communication. Years ago i looked at why i  enjoyed the main co so much and we had so much fun and i realised i loved the shared gestural humour ( for much the same reason many dancers love BSL). If you went to talk with Jean words might be limited and conversation run to a close, but if you went to dance with Jean a whole world of love, warmth and rich variety came your way, from a generous, loving heart and sensitivity. I have heard of those studies which say most of the information we receive form people is non verbal, so Jean and others like her open that world to us who are often too stuck in the world of words. They are masters of their art and take us on a journey with them challenging our ability for openness and response, and entering into a world of beauty, soulfulness and rhythm.
Above my desk is a little post it note to try to film Jean and Trevor with Debs and another dancer based on the last public showing piece that caused many people to continue to comment on it and remember it, and with an awareness that dementia and time were running on. We had hoped to film Jean and Trevor to show the joy and beauty people have to give and share even when dementia and other problems have set in.
Now we are hoping to find some archive footage from The Eden Project and will research back on old photographs. This is also where project funding can limit art as there wasn't time to find the funds to make the time and film it, and i couldn't get it made under any of our current budgets which were project specific and near their finish.

New Year and Trevor's birthday!

Lovely Shallal 2 to return to on Wednesday -Thank you to all - and we were all pleased to have Skye and Anna back and wish Eddie well with his animation course!
We looked at photos and fed back on show and future ideas, always one of my favourite creative times, what next? where do people want to take their work? and a visit from lovely Belinda...

So today is our now Annual Sponsored Dance, dancing back into the groove after the Christmas holidays, a joy and fun way to start the new year, 5 hours of non stop dance and music!

So plans, serious research and rehearsals coming up this term and new equipment our new film camera, looking forward to see what people create with it.

and chat soon with Jack from Feast to look at developing small pop up team for a few festivals? winter is a time for dreaming and scheming.

Trevor is quietly one of the most popular people in Shallal Dance Theatre and we are blessed and grateful to share with him.
He has a delightful light mischievous sense and clarity of movement and intent in improvisation and is one of the people who has particularly shone through our new way of improvised performance, enabling him to fully share his gifts.
He has had various advocates, partners and support to enable him to get to Shallal regularly especially Debs, Duane and now Star - thank you.

New Year snaps! and New County Hall "You Matter"

For our third session for Moving Words we had use of Falmouth Council chambers as well as the Falmouth Art gallery as a space.

It was exciting to watch the creative writing blossom into BSL, and start from BSL. The film element with Barbara Santi opened up the work already created into interesting cross art form experiments and the work took off. People worked in groups or individually exploring the way forward.

When Demelza and Saff translated Saff's Bat poem into sign language, it was beautiful and I felt that excitement you get when creativity and new worlds of possibility open up. By the 4th and final week everyone had something interesting going on and we look forward to the results and final edits. Thank you to everyone involved in the first Moving Words group and to Falmouth Art Gallery for their excellent and continued support. 

Next: Trevor danced with baby Ruby, so a photo was needed. 

Trevor is now 73 and has just moved to Truro, he is one of the most popular members of the main company and did 3 consecutive pieces in our recent County Hall Outreach show.

And:
about a 50 + drawings for dresses later ( Zoe has been handing them to me for a few years now!) we finally mange to combine Geraldine ( our dummy) and Zoe with the orange material and some help from Zo. so eventually 3D costume/fashion design.
First exercise was to experiment with draping the material, I didn't expect success so early on but I should have realised as Zoe is a real creative and you just have to put the right materials and support in front of her!
First week pinned, second week tacked, this week we will try it on Katie, seated in background.
I have dreams and schemes to develop a R and D project from it, but we shall see.
Zoe has dreams to create dresses for different members of the co.
And meanwhile Anna wants to continue playing with plastic and I should look for some old net in the attic.

 On the orange theme - a much needed colour in the depths of grey January - Colin and Joseph both serious Man City Fans, lay down the base colour for their canvases. I hope to record their progress.
Off camera, Jo Lumber and Sam enjoyed a trip to Newlyn Art Gallery and there were lots of little groups of work from: textiles to sci-fi cities, pastel landscapes, painting, sketchbook on ipad- Kerry's exploratory work is delicate and lovely -, to chicken wire modelling- great to have sculpture element with Anne - thank you.

We don't like any labels in Shallal but as we might enter a film competition about 'older'?! dancers, inspired by Trevor, so we may say 3 of the people rolling around on the floor are over 50!

for our new studio ipad, we have been trying it out this week, ready for Monday at The Exchange! We have 7 sketchbooks on the go and are getting tutorials on the app and skills. We are getting to know the camera and below are some examples.

Many people were busy or away but we still make a goodly number and had a joyful time, so nice to just be together without the pressure.

All the best to Echoes who were in rehearsal and so Kerry, Star and Demelza were unable to join us.
We wish them well with their show Beyond the Pale www.echoesdanceco.com. Eddie, Paul and David from Shallal 2 came, after the photos shoot as they had been with APEX. We took the photos before Giles and Trevor left. Colin put the proposal from Debs and our St Ives meeting for Trevor to possibly do a stunt - he is pleased at the idea. Very good news that Marjorie plans to return to the main co in September.

Although i don't work August ( for a start you can't drive anywhere, we lend Cornwall to the holiday visitors). I am excited for Shallal to be invited to The PlayFest in Truro, Thursday afternoon, 8th August and we hope to take a small outreach performance group and explore improvisation even further opening up our summer dances into interactive pieces with the children - oh fun ---thanks again to ACE for our recent research project!

Friday we had a training morning - thanks to Debs for updating us and for tea, coffee and homemade cake!

Then we were off to St Ives again, so beautiful! and to meet Jo Mayes re September festival pop ups!
