Shout LOUDER filming

So many possible quotes

this one caught my attention and i do believe it.

Yesterday ( filming for Shallal 2 Shout LOUDER) we had good weather and an intense but good time.

Anna could dance before work and Pete came along high off performing last Friday, wanting to do more.

Colin dropped into watch (and help, lots of heavy tables to move - always grateful for the generous spirit in Shallal Dance Theatre performers, they are the core 'family' our voting members) and ended up dancing! So pleased to have us all there, the sun shone in those beautiful gardens.

I remarked you can, see the sea, look at the twirling homely architecture and feel the good grass under your feet! what a joy. Thank you again to Hennie and Falmouth Town Council for our new Shallal 2 home!

Bobby was with us despite being tired- thank you - and Steve Tanner and Neal and the dancers were great focused and present.

I had to speak to camera at the end which although short felt quite nerve wracking.

Photos coming soon form dress rehearsal for a Call to Home, do we do it again at St Peters lots to discuss tomorrow for today its moving props from the studio so more artists can access the space! Dialogue with Dean Evans soon re Passmore Edwards more celebrations in 2023 so we are keeping the props and hope to be part of it all, on a bigger scale, again.

Apparently it was a very popular drawing so the Studio hope to make a few prints of it in the future. Again Congratulations to Yvonne, Lou, Phoebe and all and thank you to Meg at Grays Wharf. Lots of good feedback and more info on Shallal website news soon.

Waving to Pep Mogas in Catalonia and Lily and Nicky in Spain, as well as all our friends, hopefully, joining us on livestream.

We are excited and grateful to be given this commission and invitation - Thank you to Kresen Kernow.

It's very special for many of us to be able to meet up again, with caution, however it's not easy when we usually all dance so closely, ( we use a traffic light sticker system*) but we are thrilled to be out and about again. This is our first live show since January 2020.

We are challenging ourselves with this 'show' which has ended up being a mix of theme with open improvisation. We could have delved in deep and spent a year or more exploring all these fabulous themes. As always the gloriously varied creativity of everyone shines through and we hope you enjoy it.

A highlight for us is having our friends The Wheelers with us in voice.

(It will still be sometime till we can all meet up and dance again indoors with them, so Katie danced in a field to be filmed, thank you to Star.)

The Wheeler family recorded and produced their own version of Swing Low Sweet Chariot at home...

"Everyone's worked really hard and got the swing low, sweet chariot song ready, I hope you like it, we are really pleased. we wrote the arrangement, produced, played and sung it all ourselves, all 6 members of the family feature on the track." Glen

"It's been amazing seeing it grow from nothing, we did the whole thing from scratch, no backing tracks for us. We all joined in, which has been lovely. Hope you like it." Zo

There's so much to say and we hope the work speaks for itself, do come and chat with us afterwards.

Shout LOUDER: Doughnut Economics words from Manda Brookman

Shout LOUDER:  Doughnut Economics
 - words from Manda Brookman for our film

"So the question is: what is Doughnut Economics?

Doughnut economics is a way of looking at economics in a way that is fit for the 21st Century.

Up to now, economics, which actually has nothing to do with numbers, is about really managing what we have and where we live – well that’s what economics actually means; but somehow the economics up to now has managed to leave out the planet in that thinking, and it’s also left out people who don’t have a fair share.

So right now economics is a pyramid, the few at the top have the most and everyone else at the bottom has the least. So instead of that pyramid, imagine a doughnut, the sort with the hole in the middle. The vision of doughnut economics is to have a sort of economics that leaves no one behind in the middle, in the hole, in the gap, making sure that everybody has the essentials of a life: enough food and water and housing, healthcare, good company, joy, laughter and culture.

But as we create those systems we need to make sure we don’t use more than we have the right to take. If one person takes too much, it risks someone else not having enough, and busting through that outer ring of the doughnut, the one where we start going into overdraft, in terms of the impact on the climate that’s how we cause a climate breakdown – where we make the oceans acidic, and full of plastic, we destroy our forests, we break down our living planet, which really isn’t the wisest thing we can do.

So in actual fact, all doughnut economics is, is about making sure we build economic systems that are fair, that make sure that everybody can shop and travel, and take a break, and have a future and have a present that means that everybody has a fair share on a healthy planet. That nobody has not enough, that nobody is in the hole in the middle, but what we have built doesn’t end up busting through those limits, the planetary limits, it’s a finite system. We can’t carry on taking more than the   planet can sustain, we can’t carry on poisoning our rivers and burning down our forests and depleting our resources. We can’t do that, what we’re looking for is planetary and human health, where everyone has a fair share on a healthy planet, that’s what doughnut economics is. It’s an economics for everyone, and for the planet.

So if economics is about the management of what we have and where we are, not just about money,  then doughnut economics is about everyone, and ensuring that human health and planetary health is a priority, it invites a new way of thinking where we join the dots between people and place, between food and culture, between well being and caring, between homes and community, where we prioritise human and planetary health and where we invite all those voices to the table, especially those who have never been invited before or who have been excluded. This is about all of us, for us all to listen to the diversity of views and to make an economic system that hears everyone.

An Evening Yvonne's show and more

Wonderful evening, Yvonne's exhibition.

Beautifully produced and displayed at Grays Wharf, supported by work from local artists inspired by Yvonne's work. I can't do it justice i recommend going to see it.

This afternoon a group of Shallal Dance Theatre and families went to see 'The Passion' Ordinalia, the sun shone and we are off to see 'The Resurrection' tomorrow.
An amazing feat of community arts, and so many familiar faces.

I'm listening to the Wheelers, singing Swing Low Sweet Chariot! and before that Eddie (with Jacqui and Stewarts) version of The Animals came in 2 by 2, fab!! and about to watch Stars 'Angel' film.

Busy times.

Victor Jara Film

Some feedback and comments so far...

"I’d like to share that I showed the Shallal Victor Jara film ( an earlier edit ) to Tony Corden, and Polly, Tony's wife, on Saturday and that they really loved the film.

Tony has said he’d like to show it at the El Sueno Existe Festival 2022: https://elsuenoexiste.wordpress.com/2021/07/09/festival-2022-dates-confirmed. see below

...

In gratitude for the wonderful sensitivity, tenderness and joy pouring through movement, art and stillness, in the beautiful work you have made together."

"Isn’t this all so wonderful everybody?
So much beauty and care…
lovingly timeless.

And too I love your eye, rhythm and edit Adam,
like another participant, a sensitive character
that dances with,"

Dear El Sueno Supporters
The story of a shanty town - in song

Although we have had to postpone this summer's scheduled El Sueño Existe festival, we'll be holding an online event on Zoom to celebrate Victor Jara's iconic album La Población- 'The Neighbourhood' - recorded in 1972.  Se presentara todo el evento con interprete en español. There will be Spanish interpretation for the whole event.
The album tells the story of the land seizure, foundation and day to day struggles of a Chilean shanty town - Herminda de la Victoria - seen through the eyes of its inhabitants, and interweaves their testimonies with some of Victor's most poignant and defiant songs. Based on months he spent among the people there, La Población was a groundbreaking social document that blended political outrage with artistic excellence. It is still all too relevant, nearly 50 years on.
The event will be on Saturday 18th September 2021,  at 7pm /19.00 (UK time -  14.00 Chilean time) on zoom, and will also have Spanish interpretation available. Save the date!
Further details and zoom login information nearer the date. To receive the registration link direct, just send an email to elsuenoexiste19@gmail.com

"You can't tell who the organisers are."

 Best quote ever

of Shallal in a creative space," You can't tell who the organisers are."

yay!

it might also be what someone described recently as my "chaotic way of working" this was more a behind the scenes ( exasperated ) comment which i accept. We have a new general manager to hold all that now whereas before our business manager was ill and unavailable for quite a few months...Anyway...

'order out of chaos' and 'embracing the moment' and 'listening', are all part of the creative process for improvised dance and creative practice.

I have always said i need to work with good 'finishers' and those good at detail.

I'm working on our creative bridges application and had a wonderful quick chat this morning with Peter Freeman and just have a passion for reaching to our Moscow colleagues. I have visited Moscow 3 times now.

"The notion of what an artist is, is explored within Shallal. The artists as creative interaction with the world we live in."

Looking back to find event dates i saw this blog post and i find we are still on the same threads, which is heartening...https://shallal-arts.blogspot.com/2018/02/doorways-exhibition-and-from-gallery-to.html

it has an eerie reference to may scattiness as well!! "working with an indecisive and scatty creative director with a very poor filing system!!"

However i'm glad to report we have now archived a lot of our past material and are still doing more and more....a mammoth task, but on it is on its way thanks to Anna and Barbara, Phoebe and Lou.

Shout LOUDER recording in from Manda, so all set to start soon.

'A Call to Home' is percolating behind the scenes, and we will greet September at a run.

Colin has 3 'Out of the Ordinary' sessions on 5th, 6th and 7th of September.

A lot of electrical equipment to enable greater access to sessions and projects is being delivered to our home thanks to Duchy Health funding! and will be PAT tested and distributed asap.

The session went really well approx 30 people! and some beautiful art work inspired by a fun intro vlog by Jo L with suggestions and Sapphire supporting the 'blended' Zoom dance participants.

On Sunday they visit St Just and Adam will be filming, we hope the sunshines!

Today was also Skye's birthday!

you can find her on Spotify ,FB and instagram and more!

Happy Birthday Skye-anna who was on at Tunes in the dunes today! https://tunesinthedunes.co.uk/skyeanna/

Not sure i can find an old ( embarrassing ) photo in time! These are quite fun!
