Amazing Animals Exhibition 7-24 April 2025

Successful Opening Tea Party yesterday.
Many thanks to everyone.

Xanthe for photographing Lily's work,
Oli https://www.falmouth.ac.uk/staff/oli-raymond-barker     for preparing it for printing.
Helen,Therese and Colin for support, and of course everyone at Falmouth Art Gallery and our community outreach funders The Henry Smith Charity,
and most of all the amazing artists who created "Amazing Animals!"
I could write a lot about it, but I always feel we need to make the connections ourselves and let the art speak.

Already while hanging it i heard lovely comments:
"I love tigers"
( favourite comment young boy walking up the stairs - i had placed that picture where it could be passed and easily appreciated)
"Oh look at this and it's made from Pukka tea packaging"
"Please tell me about it..."
"So bright and colourful"
"I look forward to working around it"
"Such a high standard"

As usual

***Did you know there’s no such thing as a seagull? In fact there are a variety of species of gull that live in the UK and not all of them live by the sea,

Although gulls are a common sight in many areas……some species such as herring. Gulls and Kittiwakes are actually on the UK Red List.

Upcoming events info...

Pleased to be taking a group of artists to Proper Job cafe:

Before that we have our 2 shows:

Journeys

Friday 21 March 7pm

Shallal Dance Theatre performance with BSL translation

free/donation

including presenting Passing on Passmore Cards of Gratitude to two local organisations we feel are aligned to his ideals: Band of Brothers and Transition Penzance

Performance time 50-60mins

 Saturday 22 March 3pm

Shallal 2 performance  followed by some refreshments and chance to meet the performers

free/donation

Performance time approx 35- 40mins

Both groups are unique with their own personality.

Shallal Dance Theatre has often been called the main company 'mother ship' from which all else in Shallal has sprung from, it compromises about 28 performers at present, some have joined this just year others have been in it since leaving school! We have three families.

Shallal 2 is much smaller younger group based in Falmouth.

They are performing the same theme with some quirky changes, which make it possible to attend both performances and see something very different.

All the tunes are chosen, the dancers define the performance as it goes along. It is fully improvised nothing is set, save the music choices and poetry/spoken word.

On Board

Some of our On Board paintings will be on display

How do we travel? where do we go? why? People have always moved around, as do the plants and animals we share this beautiful home with.

Migration?movement?

Wildworks

Wildworks would like to invite you to attend a special event at Mount Pleasant Eco Park, Porthtowan, on Sunday 23rd March 2-5pm to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of the
‘Hello Stranger’ programme.
‘Hello Stranger’ is a programme of creative projects that ran throughout April- Dec 2024, as part of Wildwork’s larger programme
‘We are Shining’. This vital work captured a rare snapshot of what Cornwall is today, celebrating Cornwall’s long traditions of welcoming strangers, of community and outdoor performance. Throughout the year we worked with 1606 participants, 161 artists
and performers, and reached audiences of over 80,000.

The project grew in unimaginable ways and Wildworks are deeply proud and thankful for everyone’s hard work.

It’s now 2025 and we are super excited to bring everyone back together for a feast of fun and festivities where you will be able to learn about the projects, share stories, meet new folk and break bread with the
‘Hello Stranger’ community.
*
The event will begin at 2pm, with a chance to view some of the work and meet the participants. We will provide you with a delicious late lunch, served from The Canteen at 3pm, followed by a selection of sharings and performances from some of our
‘Hello Stranger’ projects. The event will finish at 5pm.

Jobs, performances, exhibitions, podcast

I think this might have to take a letter form!

So much going on:

I went to London to Wolfgang's funeral and wake. Thank you to all involved for such a moving and special time. Somehow you only begin to clearly see what someone has given and done when they are no longer with us and the depth of his life, love and influence are immense. It felt good to reach out to others who had worked with him as well, especially people he had mentioned..more another time maybe.

Our trustees have been busy supporting us and we have a new Stepping Stones Project and 2 jobs advertised.

Two freelance contracts funded by Shallals  new Arts Council ‘Stepping Stones’ project are now online on the Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum website.  The links are below.   Please would you share these links with your networks as widely as possible.

https://cornwallvsf.org/promoting/jobs/shallal-seeking-a-freelance-governance-and-leadership-development-consultant/

The community groups are going well Penzance Open House now has up to 29 participants! Thanks to The Henry Smith Charity funding

Shallal Dance Theatre has welcomed new members and is now about 30. We don't all turn up at the same time! some are busier or have more health struggles than others!

We had another Members Meeting last night with goods representation from across Shallal and a core group of interested people. It's moving to see everyones enthusiasm and the trustees enjoying being more connected into the grass roots conversations, which i can take for granted. We have always created work from all our interests and skills. Some of the most dynamic music in our next show is suggested by the dancers, we all enrich each other.

So we have 2 similar but different shows.

Again maybe that needs a whole blog of its own if i have the time. I'm trying not to work into the quiet hours of life but i'm not sure that is possible with a large family/household. It hasn't really quietened down just changed. I'm 62 soon.

We talked about a Shallal Ball!and how long we have been around - numbers aren't my strength but many say it's now Shallal's 40th year, but i think we had a year or two off while i gave birth to Michael and Anna our third and fourth children and we had run out of money and steam our administrator moved away etc.

Anyway i had I suggested we have a Shallal Ball ( any excuse to overdress and dance! ) to celebrate when everyone was back out and about after the pandemic, it has taken a while but we are all back now, however i'm not sure i have access to a free venue anymore - we shall see.

So two shows, one with BSL, at The Ladder, Redruth.

Exhibition changed in Proper Job Cafe County Hall.

Joining in two open to the public events at Krowji May and July dates coming soon.

and

3 exhibitions planned this year

Pairs

2 at Grow Box Cafe, Krowji

Peter Willis (my good friend, partner, husband )- August open event 22 August 4-7pm

Eddie Callis and Kyle Coleman ( good friends, both musicians and artists ) - October

the other at Portmeor Studios, Borlase Smart, St Ives

Anna Willis and Zoe Osmond ( good friends and were in Shallal 2 together for years before going on to uni and now art graduates) early September

New Podcast out..https://youtu.be/7nXlYbQTNGQ?si=Q66_jh67ye809xGA

i added up the hours it takes and I'm not sure i have those to spare very often, but have a few people i'm keen to talk to so hopefully more coming on the theme of Journeys. It was joy to sit and listen in detail to Colin and learn about Akong Rinpoche's love, humility, humour, compassion and service.I can't do it justice, do listen to it.
