Charity Shindig 2pm Saturday 7th Sept at The Acorn Theatre, Penzance

A quick start to the new year, straight into a guest performance, and a chance to see George -improvising musician - and the pieces created with him, 3 trios from quiet beauty to comedy and introducing 3 red flowers, (some of my favourite pieces) and a song with a solo from Zoe - if we have time!

Thank you to Colin for support through the summer holidays and thanks to Barbara.

Today i return to Friends and Dancing and to Shallal 2, and our youngest Luke starts school, ( i get a short trip on a small ferry to Flushing!) and Michael starts an Art and Design Course, so an exciting new year, and my working rhythm will change

holiday snaps, info

Photo from Jo Mayes of Kerry, Colin and David at Mount Zion in St Ives!
(more towards the end of this blog)

Kerry who worked with Shallal many years ago has just been involved in an amazing project see below!
I am still trying to download the other beautiful photographs of her work.....described below...

ART

Compulsion: St Clements Hospital

St Clements Hospital, London: 8-18 August 2013, 4pm–Sunset. A derelict East End psychiatric hospital and former workhouse is the venue for this exhibition curated by Miranda Housden. Eight artists have created site-specific work in the abandoned rooms and corridors.  The transformation of this historic building forms part of this summer’s Shuffle Festival, which includes theatre, poetry readings, and films curated by director and local resident, Danny Boyle.

London E3 4LL

Exhibiting Artists:....
Kerry Lawrence’s delicate drawing Take me Home transforms the cell like Turret of Saint Clement’s into a crystaline lace haven made from Windolene. The toxic pink liquid is re-worked into threads of lace, paying homage to the painstaking craft which women and children were engaged in during their time in the Victorian workhouses. Take me Home refers to a longing to return – words taken from Lawrence’s relative who was once a patient at St Clement’s – it expresses the desire for healing and coming home.

Kerry's Windolene windows...

Shelley O'Berg who also worked in Shallal ( many years ago) was visiting this summer and suggested a summer school or reunion or ? that is a nice idea. It could be big or small but definitely worth thinking about and would be good to have something in the summer for those who miss it. After thoughts from Inclusivity days could fit into some of it?
I would like 2 days: one open, and one for current or past members to meet /play together.....

This looks interesting!

"Culture is society talking to itself"

So easing back into the swing of things with much to be done, and to look forward to....
First thing is a Studio tea party i hope....

Well a nice evening with Jo Lumber and Debs on Thursday, chatting around words and statistics and St Ives, and these photos followed, from summer practise for stunts with David Greeves and team www.djgreeves.com for the 20th September:
Kerry roped and ready at Mt Zion!

Trevor!

Another interesting website to visit is from Laura Wild, we really miss working with her and she has consolidated her work developing;
Roaming Penzance (previously Breadline Art Group)  a new company - Roaming CIC -roamingon.weebly.com

A Thank you to Genie Smart who has served and supported us as a trustee, we are really grateful for all she has given and will keep in touch. I am copying Terry's letter as he expresses it well for us all.

Dear Genie

Thank you for all you help and assistance as a trustee of Shallal.  You have been a tower of strength to Shallal and I know that I, and others within Shallal, will miss you tremendously. We all hope that the link remains and we will see you at future performances and events. You will always be welcome, as you are regarded as a true friend of Shallal by the company as a whole and personally by all those involved in Shallal, whatever their role.

We all wish you the very best for the future.

Regards

Terry Stanton

PlayFest

ipad snaps at PlayFest......
A colourful, engaging summer event in a lovely location, as it was the holidays we tried out taking a small mobile group,
Zoe, Skye, Toby, Daniela, Anna and myself..
I like the clarity of shape they all have in the photos, we did a range of work and as always you can't predict your audience or which pieces will work best, so always a good learning curve, fun to be part of such good event, and hope to be invited back as pop-ups could work very well within that environment.
Afterwards there was time for tea and chat and then I was off on the serious business of swimming and summer guests...we started a creative conversation - which can go on for hours - and Toby kindly continued it in an inspiring and interesting letter, for artists the questions of self expression, creativity, money/funding etc are nor easy to bring together and require a lot of thinking through. I'm still on that one and yes I should be writing a first stage bid. I suppose you could call the blog my warm up exercises!

photos from last piece What a Wonderful World, Anna signing

Colin, Kerry and Trevor will be in St Ives today practising their stunts for the 20th!! Toby and Colin are busy 'making' through the summer break, and in answer to requests we may well at some point try a small summer school- we shall see.
Andy has photos from New County Hall outreach, which we hope to see soon and on we go....loving getting to know the ipad and have found a small bid to apply to for the Studios. The creative exciting part can be when you read a fund/er and suddenly think that dream could happen, this could work! It would be to build up supportive visual artists who would come and skills share/mentor the Studio artists to help lift the glass ceiling we want to move! Like the seed of an idea for a summer school, it comes from both sides of the existing work, an offer from a local professional artist and tutor and from our vision for it !

In many things in life children are the best teachers and Luke has his own sketchbook on the ipad, he is far more experimental than i will ever be and I have just found these lovely drawings by our Russian (swimming) guests, aged 10 and 12 who were visiting with their grandmother (an old friend) they come from a family of artists and designers, and I am so glad they have kept some of their work in Luke's sketchbook

Luke, experimenting!
